Devil’s
Promenade |

When I was a teenager, there used to be an old iron bridge similar to
this one spanning Spring River (it may still be there) outside of Quapaw
Oklahoma. According to legend an
Indian maiden from one tribe was in love with a young brave of another tribe
and their parents refused to let them marry.
As the story goes they held hands and jumped into the river never to
be seen or heard from again. The story claims
that if one walked across the old bridge three times after midnight, he or
she would see the devil on the bridge (thus the name Devil’s Promenade)
and hear the lovers jump off the cliff and splash into the river far
below. Well, I never walked across
the old bridge, but I did drive my 55’ Chevy across three times in a row
after midnight. My niece was with me
and our excuse for not walking across was not that we were scared, but that
it was dangerous, as a car could come along while we were on the narrow
bridge. But if I’m honest, I’ll have
to admit there was a chilling feeling just being out there, and I wouldn’t
have walked across that bridge after midnight for a thousand dollars!!! Calypso |
