Introduction to Mermaids
Introduction
No-one knows for sure when the legend of
the mermaid began. There are tales of the half-fish half woman (or man)
from just about any country in the world. Many old legends say that
mermaids are sirens… they lure men to the shore only to wreck their ship on the
rocks.
However, mermaids are also the subject of love stories… When I was in Paris
Junior College I wrote a fiction story of me as a lighthouse keeper and falling
in love with a mysterious woman that I didn’t realize was from the sea. I
won a scholarship on that story.
So whether you think of them as fiction, reality, or just simply the material
for fairy tales, mermaids have been a part of every culture in the world for
hundreds, probably thousands of years.
